Real Ale Lost Gold IPA

Massive additions of American hops in Lost Gold IPA provide the signature flavor of this Hill Country favorite. German Vienna and English Crystal malts give our IPA its rich golden-orange hue and subtle yet firm malt background. Lost Gold IPA is available year round, so there is no need to hoard this treasured brew.

Satan Red Belgian Ale

20110514-123125.jpgThe taste itself is surprisingly soft or mild as the commercial description puts it, the aftertaste yeasty and malty. No bitterness at all; I bet this would make a nice beer in warmer weather though again, it doesn’t quite feel like 8%.
Traditional ingredients (no spices) and accordingly traditional, yet good taste.

21st Ammendment Hell or High Watermelon

20110507-082739.jpgCan. Poured into a DFH tulip glass a slightly cloudy light golden color with a 1 finger white head. Surprisingly, the nose has decently strong notes of watermelon with some mild wheat notes as well. No alcohol or hops notes to mention. Medium mouthfeel. Starts slightly sweet with a building watermelon flavor and other melon. Refreshing to drink. Minimal lace. Ever so slight bitterness lingers but miniscule.

Alaskan Double IPA

20110508-070334.jpgMid-range cola brown that exhibits deep hues in the glass with dark ruby and grape juice highlights. One finger head reduces to a thin, smooth layer of retention (second pour had three fingers). Lacing starts off as solid swaths that dry and become webbed grids and, even later, specs.

To some degree the aroma reminds me of a hoppy porter. Roast offers a tangy notion that’s blended with earthy hops and hints of nuts. Sugars are present but it smell far from sweet. Molasses, unsweetened cocoa, caramel. Wisps of smoke, especially as it warms. Lightly floral. I picked out a stray, dulled citric hint once. It seems to have something of a cola vibe, actually.

While alcohol heat was mostly absent in the aroma, one sip finds Double Black IPA to be a warming critter. The aroma also seemed tame and this beer tastes anything but. Lots of roasted malts and a touch of smoke. Bittersweet chocolate is ramped up and is most prominent through mid-sip. Some dry, roasted coffee creeps in toward the finish. Moderate bitterness throughout. Some pine and remnants of citric zest on the peripheries.

The feel leaves me torn. On one hand it’s a smooth, reasonably viscous, full bodied beer. Carbonation however, is far too high. The first sip was nearly painful with sharp, scathing carbonation. The up side is that the carbonation dissipates over time and of its own accord; I didn’t have to swirl much away. Undercurrents of grit. After it opens up it is far more enjoyable. Finishes roasty with coffee and some residual bitterness.

Aside from the carbonation and the nose being on the weak side, I’ve found this beer quite enjoyable. Definitely one to let warm up, too. Not at all a CDA but a solid beer regardless. Worthwhile to give it a shot.

Speakeasy Big Daddy IPA

20110507-025324.jpg

Tap. Pours the typical orange-tinted gold, with a small amount of very dense, white head that dissipates slowly. Nose is toast, pine, and grapefruit. Taste is much the same, caramel, toffee, bready malt sweetness with a grapefruit and resinous hop note that is not as extremely biter as some of the other IPAs out there. Finishes dry and lightly bitter. The muted nature of the flavors and ABV tend to put this in a session IPA category.

Oil leak

I finally found the source of my oil leak. The adapter for the oil filter that fits into the block seems to be leaking. Should be an easy fix. I ordered a billet oil filter plate, hopefully I can patch it up before the picnic Saturday.

New front seat & door panels

The front seat, backseat, and all four door panels are finally in. The front seat will need to be recovered at some point but it’s far better than the interior that was in the car when I bought it.

New backseat & temporary carpet

I got the backseat in and put down some scrap carpet I got from a buddy. TheĀ permanentĀ carpet will be black OEM carpet, but for now this should help keep out some of the heat and give it a more finished look.
